August 2021 FROM THE DESK OF THE POLICE CHIEF The Power of Ice Cream By Ryan Thompson, Pine Knoll Shores Police Chief As an adult, the two most common scenarios in which an individual will interact with a police officer is if they are being stopped for a traffic violation or calling to report some type of criminal or civil incident that has occurred. In most cases, neither of these circumstances is pleasant or enjoyable. Children are most likely to see a police officer when their parents are stopped for a traffic violation or in a restaurant when one of their parents (normally Dad) tells them the police officer is going to take them away and lock them up. Both circumstances can leave the child fearing police officers and not understanding our role in society. A side note to parents: Please stop telling your children that we are going to take them to jail. Although you may be joking, the negative impacts on children can be lasting. After the sudden passing of former Mayor Ken Jones, I was willing and honored, at the request of the Board of Commissioners, to serve out the remainder of the former mayors term. Upon my appointment, I indicated my intention to run for the mayors position during the municipal elections scheduled for this year. I have tried to respect and honor the Office of Mayor, aU the residents of the town, our excellent and conscientious staff, and the opinions of the commissioners. I have enjoyed working to the best of my abUities to ensure that the Town of Pine Knoll Shores maintains and enhances a responsible and efficient government that ensures public safety and promotes the quality of life and the protection of our unique environment. I have also tried to respect the rights of (Continued on page 13) Pine Knoll Shores Police Officer Scott Bullock with three beachgoers who do not seem at all unhappy about being (ice cream) ticketed for practicing safety on the beach.
